Health and safety are closely interwoven. Better workplace safety will lead to improved employee health and wellbeing.

Personal Safety Equipment

In addition to meeting legal requirements, the use of personal safety equipment at MEST is required so that employees are not harmed while completing their assigned tasks.

Only certified equipment can be used, and it is available at the depots in Tórshavn, Skála and Runavík.

It is, for example, a requirement to use helmet, safety footwear, hearing protection, gloves, face shields and eye protection, etc.

Employees have a duty to use the personal protective equipment they have been allocated while they are working.

Some types of equipment have an expiration date. This means that it needs to be tested and be replaced when it has expired. The safety helmet is one example of this type of equipment.

If the helmet is beyond its expiration date, it is to be turned into the depot and a new one will be issued. If the helmet has been damaged or has received a hard knock, it needs to be replaced.

Safety equipment must be treated with care and kept in pristine condition. Normal wear and tear are accepted. For example, apart from the labels put on a helmet when it is issued from the depot, it is not to be written on or marked in any way.

If these rules are not met and any equipment is not handled with due care, employees may be required to replace such equipment and will be liable to pay for the replacement equipment.
